You Need To Lose Control

I saw this quote that really inspired me. It said, “You will be amazed at how things fall magically into place once you let go of the illusion of control.” I wish I knew were this quote came from.  I’ll be honest, I saw it from the spiritual gangster Instagram page. No shame. (Side note, if any of you golden souls know of the actual spiritual gangster who said that, comment below!)

Seriously though, this really hit home for me. I was talking to my boyfriend the other night and he goes, “why do you dwell on things like that? It’s in the past and completely out of your control, so why worry about it?” I don’t think anyone has ever asked me that before. I don’t think I have even asked myself that.

Why do I do that?

I said, “Wow, you’re right. I guess my biggest stressors in life are the things that are out of my control.” He said, “well, that’s pointless babe. Don’t do that to yourself.”

So now I say to you, babes, “that’s pointless, don’t do that to yourself.”

It’s funny how things become so complex in our minds, but other people can put something in perspective for you with such simplicity. My boyfriend is great at that. He’s very matter-of-fact and I’m very let’s-completely-overthink-the-situation. I will seriously drive myself nuts dwelling on so many different things that worry me, most of which I can’t change or help. Then he comes along and relaxes my mind by simplifying it all.

Why do we fight simplicity?

Stressing over things that are out of your control doesn’t make you a control freak, it means you are a person who dwells on things.  It means you care too much. It means you are compassionate about how others feel even if it’s at the cost of your own feelings. You feel things more than others, and that’s okay. What isn’t okay is adding that unnecessary anxiety on your shoulders. Not only is that unfair to you, but it is also a complete and total waste of time.

“You will be amazed at how things fall magically into place once you let go of the illusion of control.”

You go around in circles thinking of ways to control the uncontrollable without even realizing it.  You overanalyze situations, searching for a way to change the unchangeable. Instead of driving yourself crazy, falling for the illusion that you have control, just

let it go.

Things you have control of:

  • How you treat others
  • How you make others feel
  • Your work ethic
  • The effort you put into every day
  • How you treat yourself

Things you don’t have control over:

Everything else.

Let go of that illusion. Have some faith. Faith in the fact that the past is the past, and completely unchangeable.  Tomorrow’s worries are pointless because it hasn’t even happened yet and it is completely out of your control. Today, be kind to people. Make them feel important. Work hard. Put as much effort as you possibly can into every single day. Lastly, be good to yourself. If you do all of that, and let go of the illusion of control in the face of the uncontrollable, you will achieve a beautiful thing.

Peace of mind.

Just a 23 year old recent college graduate who is totally okay with not knowing what's next. Adventurer, wanderer, and dreamer but hopefully in the most non cliche way. Happiest by the ocean.
