10 Things Every College Freshman Needs To Know

As I’m continuing in my graduate studies, I honestly can’t help but feel a little jealous of every college freshman out there. Being an adult is scary. It’s stressful and once college comes to an end it honestly sneaks up on you and hits you with reality harder than you can anticipate. It’s a part of life, and that chapter has closed for me, but for you guys, it’s just beginning.

Here are ten things I wish someone had told me when I was a freshman in college:

1. You are not stuck in your major! Change it!

You may find that you actually hate your major, or that you’re super interested in another field through your gen eds.  THAT’S OKAY. Don’t freak out.  That’s what this year is all about. It’s about finding yourself, what you like, what you don’t like, and who you really are.  Be open to it all.

2. Stop playing it safe.

When you start college, you will find yourself feeling overwhelmed a lot. As much as it freaks you out, throw yourself into the unknown. Get out there and get to know people. Explore on your own. Try new things. It may be uncomfortable at first, but you will thank yourself later.

3. You’re going to fail, and that’s okay. Don’t stress it.

You’re going to fail an exam, quiz, or assignment. You may even fail a class. You may not even do so hot the whole semester. The point is, it will be okay. Learn from it. Step up. Do better. Pick yourself up when you fail and push yourself to succeed after your failures. You will be more motivated, you will be stronger, and you will learn from your mistakes.

4. Go to that party. Live it up.

This is literally the only time in your life you can go to parties, have a blast, and have no worries. I promise you, you will never be this carefree again. Live in the moment.

5. Make as many friends as you can.

So, you’re away from your high school friends. Or, you went to the same school. Get out there and meet new people! Don’t stay in your safe little bubble.

6. Explore.  See all that you can.

Go explore the campus. Explore the town around it. Go to cute little cafes, and hole in the wall restaurants. Visit the trademark restaurants that are loved by the university. Go to sports games. Get out there and be a part of it all.

7. Embrace all of the changes.

People hate change. We hate the unknown, and love what is comfortable. Well, get over that. Get uncomfortable. Embrace it all.

8. DON’T take it for granted.

You are young, going to college, and you get to be relatively carefree. Yes, school is hard, and work kind of sucks, but you are in the middle of the time of your life. Realize that. Enjoy it. Live it up.

9. Actually try to learn all that you can in your classes.

Take advantage of this opportunity to learn. Pay attention in class. Work hard. Don’t waste your money or time.

10. Have a the absolute time of your life.

Do it. Have as much fun as you possibly can and don’t miss out on a single thing.

Just a 23 year old recent college graduate who is totally okay with not knowing what's next. Adventurer, wanderer, and dreamer but hopefully in the most non cliche way. Happiest by the ocean.

  1. Yes to so many of these things! The friends you make in college are the friends that you are going to have the rest of your life. Before you know it school will be over and you all of a sudden will be an adult living in the real world, which often times isn’t as fun… live it up! Travel lots! Do all the wild and crazy stuff now! Go to the party! You only get to do this once 🙂
